Updating An Old Friend

Growing up, I had a favorite rocking chair. Even as I got older, I loved rocking in it. It had the smoothest rock to it. I can remember it putting me to sleep.

And it still does! Mom handed the rocking chair down to me when I moved into my condo. When we moved into the house, the chair made its home in the living room. It was just waiting for little JCrew's to rock!

The original upholstry is a beautiful, yet simple print. It's a simple blue with a dark brown and tan accents.

Through the years it has taken some beatings, but nothing was as bad as when puppies chewed on the skirt. I'm not sure which puppy did it. It could have been a combination of all the puppies we've had and they each tore up the corner just a little more than the last.

Mom kept suggesting that we get it re-upholstered. But getting the whole chair recovered would be expensive. Then she had an idea she got from the Paula Deen collection, where we could update the skirt and possibly the edge of the cushion. It would use a different print but would be tied in.

We went to the fabric store and took a piece of the blue fabric from the chair and a green pillow from the couch with us. The new print we were going to use would have to go with both colors.

Mom made the new skirt. I was so impressed with her skill!!

We decided against updating the cushion because it would be too much. Instead, we made a pillow to rest on the chair. This would tie in the skirt and not look like we replaced the skirt only becaused it was ruined.

Look at the detail. The piping looks amazing!

And since there was still extra fabric left over, we made another pillow for the couch. There was only enough material for one, but it still looks good.

I love the updated chair.

THANK YOU, MOM!

2-Month Checkup

Little JCrew went in today for his two-month checkup. He did great! He got his shots and cried at the top of his lungs, but the second I picked him up, he stopped. He forgot all about it.

Little Guy after his shots
He did great and has been extra cuddly this evening. Say a little prayer for him this week. We go to a pediatric cardiologist Nov 2nd (of all days!) I know he will be fine.

The week has gone by quickly as my first week back at work. Thank goodness. Each day I get in and get out as fast as I can. How quickly priorities change when a little one comes into your life.

Colder temperatures are coming and Little JCrew is ready. We got him mittens and a bigger hat over the weekend. He looks so cute in them!

Height: 23.5 inches
Weight: 12 pounds 12 ounces

So glad tomorrow is Friday. Have a great weekend!

Another Collage

I mentioned last week that I was picking up my maternity pictures. I found oversized white frames and a blank wall to fill.

I've seen the oversized white frames in Pottery Barn, but the price tag was a little steep. However, I liked the variety of sizes to choose from.

Pottery Barn Wood Gallery Oversized Mat Frames

The wall space available is 102 inches wide. I played with the layout of the frames I was trying to stay wthin 70 inches total for the collage. I must have come up with 30 diferent configurations, but none seemed to be the one.

Part of the problem was that all the prints I picked were in the landscape orientation. I honestly thought I picked out one portrait oriented print. So. I was having trouble making all the landscape frames work in a group.

So, we mixed in a couple non-frame pieces.

I then started hanging the pictures. I was talking to Mr. JCrew when I started and miscalculated the measurements and started hanging the pictures six inches too far to the right. I didn't realize this until I was hanging the last picture on the bottom row and saw the extra space I had to the left.

oops! too far to the right.

I took down all the frames and moved them over six inches. Luckily, it was for only four frames. Once the whole collage was up, there was only two holes that I have to touch up.

I really like the final result. Perfect placing too. You can see the whole collage through the doorway from the bathroom.

Happy Birthday, Logan!

Little JCrew has a special aunt that has a birthday today!

My sister is an amazing person. I was three years old when she came into the family. I was so in love with her! I wanted to feed her and do everything for her. She had a strong love for animals. Every Christmas she asked for an Ostrich. One year I think it was a Zebra!

Her love for animals has lead to her to a dream job. She's manager at Kindred Spirits Sanctuary in Florida. The sanctuary takes in farm animals that are abused, neglected or unwanted and gives them a home that is loving and caring. Each animal has a special story.

A new project my sister has done to raise money for the sanctuary is to have the animals create paintings given in exchange for donations. In the spring of this year, the sancutary took in chicks that were bought by a church for an Easter service. The chicks had only one purpose and the church did not think of what they would have to do with the chicks after their purpose was served. These chicks made a special painting for Little JCrew. It is being displayed in his room.

The chicks aren't the only ones that paint! Pearl the pig, Owen the blind calf, Euree the Palamino, and Butterscotch the goat are just a few. Butterscotch was born without the use of her hind legs and has a make-shift wheelchair made out of PVC pipes that helps her get around. All the proceeds from her paintings are going towards a new wheelchair for her. The new wheelchair will allow her to manuever in the pasture with the other goats.

To view the other paintings, you can go to the Facebook page for Kindred Spirits.

I coudn't ask for a better sister or a better aunt for my little guy. I hope she has a wonderful day today. She deserves a day as special as she is.

WE LOVE YOU, LOGAN!

Testing Video

We finally got our Flip Video Recorder to work! We used it to record the revealing of the baby gender, and then we brought it to the hospital with us and it died!! We forgot to charge it... and then it didn't want to charge at all. I was bummed thinking I would have to use my iPhone for all the videos, but we got it working.

Here is a test video. We created a YouTube account and will be posting videos for you to watch. Now that he's interacting with us more, it's a lot of fun to capture.

Taking In the Moments

It is my last week staying at home with Little JCrew. I have had so much fun being with him every minute of the day. I'm excited to go back to work (kind of) but I'm going to miss the babe so much!

In the last eight weeks he has changed so much. He is a ham! He smiles for every stranger he meets. And his cooo's are so sweet to listen to. He really is a sweet boy! And I can definitely admit to him being a daddy's boy. He lights up when Mr. JCrew talks to him. I honestly thought I would have a mommy's boy for the first year and then he'd be all about his daddy after that. But it looks like he is in love with his daddy already. I love to see the two of them together. Mr. JCrew has become the best dad to our little guy.

When I weighed him this morning, he was 13 pounds! I'm glad to know he's getting all his nutrients. He eats about every three hours, day and night. He hasn't slept through the night (6 hours or more) yet, but he will get there in his own time. I've gotten use to it. I'm not worried about going back to work on little sleep because I've essentially already been working this whole time. The only difference will be that I am actually at work. He stays up a lot during the day now and he is so much fun to interact with. Right now I'm cherishing the nightly feedings as a time to bond. Once he starts sleeping through the night, he and I won't have that time to cuddle with just each other.

Little JCrew loves to sit and he loves to stand. While I was on a conference call yesterday, all he wanted to do was have me help him stand. It is so cute to see how happy he is while standing. And he likes to sit like a big boy. He's started to bat at hanging toys.

I'm excited to be picking up my maternity pictures today. I have ONE blank wall left in my house (in the master bedroom) and planned to make a collage with the pictures. I plan to mix in two pictures of Wilks into the collage that I will change periodically. Hopefully I'll tackle that project today/tomorrow and have a post for you soon.

Happy Wednesday to you all, and Happy Eight Weeks to my little guy.

Someone Found Their Fingers

Little Man is SEVEN weeks old today!

I can't get enough of him! He's been growing so much, that we've had our up and down moments. I'm blaming the growth spurt for his behavior. (at least I keep telling myself that.) He didn't want to nap, but needed it. He wanted to eat every hour and a half or two hours; but would eat so much he'd spit up a lot of it to avoid a stomach explosion. It was very tiring.

I feel at seven weeks, we've made a breakthrough. He can soothe himself back to sleep, thanks to his long fingers! He found those things and hasn't turned back since. When he stirs at night, we hear him find those fingers and start sucking. He likes to put the index and middle fingers in his mouth. He graduated to size 1 diapers and is wearing 3 month size clothes.

last part of a smile

We've also got a Chatty Cathy on our hands (the boy-version.) This morning he just wouldn't stop talking (a trait he gets from his dad.) I thought it was cute. I wasn't giving him eye contact, so he just kept talking to get me to look at him. Of course, I partook in the conversation with him and he seemed to appreciate the small talk.

lean into the turn!

This little boy has found our heart strings! I love being a mommy!

At seven weeks he...
- sleeps great at night in the bassinet, but hates daytime naps. He naps better on me or daddy or in the Baby Bjorn.
- is a great nurser. He loves to eat and sometimes over does it.
- is a morning person. He is all smiles when I talk to him in the morning.
- can grab onto things and keep a firm grip
- really studies our faces.
- finally recognized that he has puppies!
- soothes himself back to sleep

I Big!

Little Wilks says, "I big!" He is growing so fast.

2 weeks

3 weeks

And now he is coo'ing and smiling a whole bunch. Once I figure out how to load a video, I will post the video I caught of him smiling. I got lucky catching it. I watched it over and over for a whole week. Now the smiles are coming more often and he is acting like he wants to talk. Of course, it's babble, but it is the sweetest sound!

Sewing Pillowcases

A pillowcase is one of the easiest things to sew. So, why did it take me so long to get it done? I've got a Little JCrew that loves his mommy's attention is why.

I had a baby pillow that needed a pillowcase for Little JCrew. I went and picked out fabric, so the first step was taken care of. But the fabric and pillow both layed there for a while.

I measured out the fabric and pinned it together. Then I was stalled again. I got the sides sewn together in the next free second I had.

The last step was to hem the edge. Finally, done!!! And I love the fabric. It's such a fun pattern. I already visualize him carrying it everywhere and napping in the car with it.

I made two. One fun one, and one more formal. :)
