Bonus Mirror

Moving on up the staircase, I found another large mirror for upstairs. The walls in the bonus room are bare, with the exception of one, but it hasn’t bothered me.

But I did find that the landing part of the room felt bare.

Looking up the staircase, you see the little chair, but that’s it.

I decided to be on the hunt for a large mirror. One that looked like a window. My hope was that the light from the little window across from the mirror, would bounce off the mirror and shine more light into the room.

I was at Pier 1 and looked at their mirrors. That’s when I saw it! And it was on sale. It was at the back of the pile, so I tried to hold all the other mirrors, stick my camera back there and take a picture so I could see it. That didn’t work. I still couldn’t tell.

I then proceeded to move all the mirrors individually so that I could see the mirror and make a decision. I loved it!

I brought it home and showed Mr. JCrew. I’m sure he’s not as excited as me, but he showed support!

Now that it’s up there, I love it! It’s just what the space needed. And Little JCrew told me that it looked like a window, so I knew I did good!

That side of the room now feels complete. It feels like there is a window up there and it bounces the light into the room. It's also awesome how the wood color and paint went with what we already have.

Living Room Mirror

I have been living with a blank wall in the living room. There are not many walls in this room, as it is very much a part of the open-concept.

I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do on that wall.

Right now I am really into textures. What grabs my eye is when multiples things are together but all the same color. I contemplated adding trim to that wall and painting it the color of the wall. It would add interest, yet not be bold. I researched a lot of different styles and found many I liked.

I even thought of doing it myself, but I wasn’t sold on the idea enough as I was not finding myself going to the lumber store right that minute.

I then was watching a Fixer-Upper and saw a mirror in the entryway. That was it! I needed a large mirror on that wall. I wanted the EXACT mirror I saw on Fixer Upper!

Fixer Upper

The mirror was a great idea because it would make you feel like there was a window there. It would continue the look out the front door, yet you’d actually be looking at the backyard! There are glass doors leading to the backyard that are picked up by the mirror.

I searched for the Fixer Upper mirror and found similar ones at Restoration Hardware and Pottery Barn. But with the size, I had to be aware of the weight and make sure the mirror could be hung in the landscape position and not the portrait way. That was the hard part. Most large mirror were wardrobe mirrors that are meant to be leaned against a wall (with proper anchors).

My mom was then looking at Old Time Pottery and found lots of large mirrors. I found time to go and look for myself. I looked the first time and thought about it. But I went back the next day and hung it the minute I got home.

Luckily, how it was centered on the wall lined up with studs and I did not have to use special anchors! That right there, made me so excited! In ten minutes, the mirror was hung and I was happy.

I love the way it looks. It really does give the illusion. I love mirrors that pretend they are windows! And the itch to decorate that wall has now subsided.

Mirrors

Perhaps one of my favorite details in the house are the mirrors. In the last house, I used mirrors to reflect light where windows were missing. In this house, we have plenty of windows, so mirrors are only in the bathrooms, with the exception of one.

I really can't pick a favorite. They are all so unique.

Mom found the mirror for her bathroom at a furniture re-finisher store. They collect old pieces and either re-stain them or paint them. Sometimes, they re-purpose them.

The mirrors in the boys' bathroom are just plain wall-to-wall mirrors that you normally find. I wanted the focus to remain on their green cabinets.

The guest bedroom bathroom is my top 3 favorites. We found it at the same location we found mom's mirror. I liked the color they painted it and the shape. Luckily, it fit! It was an exact measurement!

The powder bathroom is another of my top three fav's. It was a mirror that came off of a small dresser. I didn't refinish it and I loved the shape.

The master bathroom needed a mirror that was ten feet long. Instead, I had three pieces cut with a tombstone radius.

I'm not much of one to stop and look at myself in the mirror all the time; although, sometimes I should to make sure I don't have food on my face or that I need to brush my hair. But these mirrors make me want to stop and look. It's just another way to add character.
