Baby F's Birth Story

I always document my little one's birth stories, and I need to write this all down before I forget.

Baby F (Baby #3) was born two days before his due date. Little JCrew was one day late, and Mr. Brigglesworth was three weeks early, I had no idea when to expect our new arrival. Although I did not have the feeling that he would be early, I made sure I was ready just in case. I was really hoping he wouldn't be early.

Baby F was born on a Monday (just like Mr. Brigglesworth). The weekend prior, I made sure I was active. We went Strawberry picking Saturday morning. Little JCrew had a soccer game Saturday morning, as well. I stood up while watching because I wanted gravity to do its thing. Little JCrew then had a birthday party that evening and I played in the yard with my plants during the afternoon. On Sunday, I took the boys with me to do more plant work at our neighborhood clubhouse. There were people inside, and I am sure they were looking at my big belly with two little kids in tow wondering what I was doing planting plants. But I was determined to be active and wear myself out.

At my weekly appointments, the doctor was in disbelief that the baby was so high. His head was not engaged at my 39 week appointment. We were going to wait until the next appointment to see when to set an induction date. I would stay on my feet and feel Baby F get lower, but as quickly as he lowered, he quickly shot back up.

On Monday, I went into work as normal. All my co-workers were still surprised to see me. But I would laugh it off and say Baby F wasn't ready. That day, we had a luncheon for two co-workers that were leaving the program. It was at a restaurant and another coworker/friend of mine rode with me. The director of our program sat next to me and asked how I was. He then asked when I was due. I then told him when and told him I had brought my running shoes to walk the hills at work during breaks. He asked that I not do that. Ha! He was only slightly kidding. And I really had brought my shoes! As we left the luncheon, I lifted my leg to get into my car and I felt a little gush. My bladder was full, so I thought I needed to use the restroom. When we got back to work, I was worried about the possible spot on my khaki pants and it seemed like everyone was talking outside the building entrance and I didn't want anyone behind me. I finally just went inside and went to the restroom. I pee'd but it felt different. I had a one o'clock meeting to go to so I went on.

With Little JCrew and Mr. Brigglesworth, my water broke at the hospital. With Little JCrew, I was lying in the hospital bed and it felt like I pee'd in the bed. With Mr. Brigglesworth, it was a big gush as I was pushing during active labor. I expected water breaking to be a big gush. It was not that obvious.

Right when I got to the meeting, I felt another small gush. I stopped at the restroom again. I then stuffed my underwear with toilet paper and went to the meeting. I stood in the back of the room and didn't want to sit down for fear of messing up the chair. Me standing up wouldn't appear odd, because usually I stand up in the back, just not the entire time.

The meeting ran long, and I remember a coworker turning to me and asking me to go into labor so we could be dismissed. It was then that I realized I could be in labor. My "bladder" was still "leaking" and this might be my water breaking. It was just weird. I then checked my pants and realized how soaked they were. I waited for everyone to leave the conference room and I ran to the restroom. I tried to dry my pants as much as I could. It was no use. I then made a mad-dash to my desk to get my things and go home. It had just started raining, so I left my umbrella behind so that my wet pants looked like they were drenched from the rain.

I emailed Mr. JCrew to let him know my water broke and I was going home to change clothes and finish up some work. He could come home or wait; contractions had not started. His excitement was busting and he came right home. We gathered our things and told Little JCrew he was in charge while we were away.

We checked into the hospital around 5:30PM and saw a waiting room full. But we were ushered right back and into Labor Room #7. Our nurse was so nice and we had such a great experience. I was having contractions but they didn't hurt. It was almost like a fuzzy feeling (Hard to describe). I decided to get an epidural before the pain started. I hadn't eaten, so as the minutes passed, I just kept thinking how hungry I was.

Mr. JCrew and I watched TV as we waited. I think we watched NCIS and Golden Girls. The on-call doctor was on her way to the hospital to deliver another baby, so they started a high dose of Pitocin to get me caught up so that Baby F could be delivered while doctor was on site. I had no issue with this because I knew the epidural would hopefully cover any pain associated with the pitocin. And even with the epidural, I felt the contractions, but without the pain. They used a pillow to put me in a "wedge" position so that each contraction would move Baby F down (he was still not engaged!) It worked, as I soon called the nurse in to tell her I felt the baby between my legs. I really didn't think he was in between my legs, but I held myself back from pushing because he felt like he was right there ready to come out if I sneezed!

It was then that they got everything ready and I pushed three times and Baby F was delivered! The hospital had a new policy they implemented where the baby never leaves the momma. All procedures, vitals, baths are done right in the room with you. I really enjoyed this. Baby F stayed with me the whole time and I saw everything. With both of my babies before, Mr. JCrew got to go with the baby while I stayed behind. With Mr. Brigglesworth, I was able to walk down the hall and stand outside the nursery window watching.

Baby F came a few minutes shy of midnight. We were moved to a permanent room at 2AM. Right after delivery, I sent Mr. JCrew on a food run. He spent $20 at the hospital giftshop getting sandwiches and snacks. He delighted in it and the nurse and I laughed at the amount he spent and joy he got out of it.

The next morning we called my mom to speak with the boys and tell them about their new brother. They went to school all proud with signs to let their friends know all about Baby F. It was easier then them having to remember details. They came straight to the hospital after school and they fell in love just as we did. Mr. Brigglesworth kept repeating, "He's out of your belly!"

Baby F has been an angel baby from Day 1. He doesn't get upset and is easygoing. He sleeps easy and eats great. His latch was VERY strong from the beginning and he loved his fingers. We moved him to a paci and he loves it.

The hospital stay was great, but I was ready to get back home. The boys still dote on their baby brother and it is the cutest thing to hear them talk to their baby brother. They can talk to him in high-pitch voices like pros and the kisses are abundant to Baby F. We are so happy with our newest addition. I didn't know life could be this good!

Baby B's Birth Story Part 3

In Part 1, I told you how labor started. In Part 2, I described the painful labor and the delivery. Now I'll continue our journey all the way to our first day home.

When I was in labor, the pain was so bad that I used my fists on pressure points in my hips during contractions. Sometimes it worked; most the time it didn't. I told Mr. JCrew how sore I anticipated being during recovery. But I was up and walking quickly and the recovery from this delivery has been amazing!

They think my water not breaking was a blessing. I almost delivered a baby still in his amniotic sac ( which is possible.) But it was a blessing because it stretched me well enough that I didn't tear or need an episiotomy. That, my friend,s is the difference between night and day. Not having stitches is awesome. I was able to go to the nursery and take pictures as Mr. JCrew gave him his first bath! Just standing there! And then I walked back. I was able to get on and off the bed so easily!

If anything, Little JCrew's labor was more pleasant, but Baby B's recovery is 100 times better.

Since Baby B was early, they let me know he could possibly be put on oxygen or need a ventilator. If he needed the latter, he'd have to be transferred to a different hospital.

When Baby B came out, I heard him cry and they said he was already pee'ing. They immediately put him on my chest. He was all "cheesy." His cry was so sweet to hear. His lungs were working. Then he became quiet and chill (just like Little JCrew.)

The next few days in the hospital were great. We went a little stir crazy, but the rainy weather outside at least didn't taunt me like a beautiful day would have.

Baby B came out weighing 6 pounds and 3 oz. He is 19.5 inches long. He has normal size feet and dark brown hair. He learned to latch quite fast and became a snacker. His first and second night were quiet. He slept really good. His nights at home have been different. He sleeps ALL day to become awake and alert at 8PM. Then he doesn't want to go to bed! But he still does good throughout the night.

Brothers

The moment didn't last long.

Little JCrew loves his baby brother. He leans in to kiss and hug him. He's offered his paci and takes his hat. He even rocks him in the bassinet and tells him "Hi" a lot. I cannot wait for them to grow up together. The fun has just begun!

Going Home

We had our first weight check at the pediatrician and we're down to 5 pounds 9 oz. No concern yet, but it means almost daily appointments until he's back up to birth weight... Just like we had to do with Little JCrew.

Mr JCrew and I feel so blessed that Baby B came into this world healthy. We do not take this fact for granted.

Baby B's Birth Story, Part 2

Continued from Part 1...

It's 2AM on Monday, October 1, and we are finally being admitted to the hospital and I'm going to get my epidural! With Little JCrew I waited as long as I could before I got the epidural, and I knew how great it was to be pain-free, so I wasn't going to wait with Baby B.

I finally get my epidural and had relief for about an hour. At one point the numbness was only on the left side. Then the numbness went away. I was feeling pressure again. I let the nurse know immediately and she showed me what button to push to give me an extra dose. The extra dose didn't work and I was now in pain like I had no medication.

I was checked for progress and I was now 6 cm and 100% effaced. The nurse explained I was feeling pressure again because my water had not broke. I asked her if she could break it, and it's a task that only the doctor's could do. However, if my water broke while she "checked" my progress, that was allowed to happen. She tried to pinch my bag of waters and NOTHING! But after some time, the bag started to leak. It did with this Little JCrew and they counted that as my water breaking. Not this time! My water had not broken according to the doctor.

After laboring with intense pain for two more hours, I thought we were waiting on the doctor to come break my water. The nurse asked if I wanted the anesthesiologist to come give me another dose. I quickly said, "Yes." In the meantime, she wanted me to push to try and break my water. I tried, but quickly stopped. I had never felt pain like that.

By now I was 10 cm dilated and my water had still not broken. I asked the nurse where the doctor was so that he could break my water. After checking in with him, he told her to have me stop pushing and he was not coming in to break my water. WHAT?!? I will admit I started calling him names like, "Stupid." I wanted to reject the doctor and tell him to not come at all. I felt he was being lazy. (Note: this doctor was not my OB/GYN. He was the on-call doctor for the practice. I love my OB.)

The anesthesiologist showed up and we discovered my epidural catheter had fallen out! I was feeling pain not because of my unbroken water, but because I had no pain medicine in me. I was getting a taste of what it feels like to labor med free!! Oh, I could not do it all the way. I honestly thought I was going to have to deliver without meds and wanted to stop the process if I could.

I then received a saddle-block. It's a shot that is suppose to numb you instantly; and it works 100% of the time, not just 99%. It wasn't until three contractions later that I felt it work. What a relief! Going through contractions 1-2 minutes apart with pain gave me no time to catch any kind of relief. I might could have handled the pain if the contractions were further apart.

Once I received the shot and felt no pain, I was able to push and my water immediately popped. It was like a fountain. I thought it was cool! I had the biggest smile on my face. I knew I didn't have to wait to deliver anymore. It was now 6AM and I had waited long enough. However, we were waiting on the doctor to come catch the baby.

Once he arrived, I was ready to push and one push is all it took. Baby B was half way out when he told me to stop so he could unwrap the cord that was twisted twice around his neck. Then I finished the push and he was born! That moment alone made me forget all the bad moments of the morning. I didn't tear or have a cut, which was a miracle! It has made recovery awesome! I'm already bouncing around doing normal things.

... to be continued on Friday with statistics of Baby B.

Baby B's Birth Story, Part 1

So, I get a text from my little sister gawking at my choice of post topics for Monday. She was shocked I wrote about bushes on the day that my baby was born. I already had that post created and just pushed "publish" that way you'd have something to read. But I knew I could not leave you without an update on Baby B.

On Friday, I left you with a post about Baby B being 37 weeks. Little did I know that Baby B was listening to me say he was full-term and decided he'd make his entrance early Monday morning.

He is 24 hours old now and getting comfortable in his new outside world. He's coo'ing more and moving around. He and I are a lot less groggy than yesterday. I got my first wink in 24 hours and it felt great!

Briggs Merrick 10/1/12

Baby B's arrival started at 2:30PM on Sunday. We had gone to Mr. JCrew's soccer game and I felt fine. I still felt fine after the soccer game, but I noticed my contractions were becoming like the painful labor contractions. When we got little JCrew home for a nap, I started to time the contractions. They were nothing close to consistent. If I sat on the couch, they disappeared. Once I got up and moving, they came.

We decided to go to bed and I thought they would go away. At 930PM, a contraction woke me up. From 10-11PM the contractions were ten minutes apart. The rule of thumb to remember is 5:1:1. Wait to go to the hospital until your contractions are five minutes apart; last for 1 minute; and keep this pattern for at least an hour. Even though my contractions weren't five minutes apart, I still decided it was time. I woke up Mr. JCrew and called my mom to come over to watch Little JCrew sleep.

We checked into the hospital at exactly midnight. They put me in a triage room to monitor me. I had not gone to a triage room with Little JCrew. I think it was because Baby B was 37 weeks and they thought the contractions would go away; but I knew they wouldn't. They checked my progress and I was 3cm dilated and 70% effaced. They would come back in an hour to check my progress again.

The contractions grew in pain. It had not yet been an hour, so I called the nurse in to ask for something for pain. After consulting with the doctor, he did not want to give me an epidural or any kind of pain medicine until he knew my body was progressing. I then became determined to make it happen. With each contraction I pushed like I was doing situps and exhaled like I was blowing up a balloon.

Sure enough when that hour came, I called the nurse for her to check me. Contractions were 5-6 minutes apart and I was 4 cm dilated and 85% effaced. It was progress. I could now be admitted to the hospital and get my epidural. Relief was in sight.

... to keep you from going numb, this post will continue on Thursday.
